The Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence continues her streak of outspokenness, this time tempered with some scripted kudos.
Ms. Lawrence, the star of “Silver Linings Playbook,” was the host of “Saturday Night Live” over the weekend, just after she won a Golden Globe and made a comment about a fellow nominee (“I beat Meryl”) in her acceptance speech. In her “SNL” monologue, she defended it as a quote from “The First Wives Club” but went further in taking on her fellow Oscar hopefuls: “Ladies, I love you all, but you’re about to get served.”
She didn’t spare the oldest or youngest contenders.
“Emmanuelle Riva from ‘Amour,’ an 85-year-old French lady? Yeah, I think I can take you,” she said. As for 9-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis, “the alphabet called,” she said, “they want their letters back.”
But Ms. Lawrence followed all her mini-disses with a heartfelt compliment, lest anyone start to think she would not be a gracious winner. Tommy Lee Jones was not amused.
